The New York Times published an article last week with the intention to calm news executive with an article about a publication that is surviving solely on its print version.

In a Country of Monopoly Newspapers, Palo Alto is Awash in Competition by Miguel Helft

I have mixed feelings about Dave Price’s marketing strategy. His newspaper, The Daily Post, which circulates in Palo Alto, Calif., is still profitable because of circumstances in my opinion.

The Palo Alto area has a “highly educated, engaged population” that allows The Post to survive. But with release of the iPad, which allow fast easy browsing of publications, the Palo Alto population may change their media consumption tendencies, based on accessibility.

However, I do agree with him that ” giving news away online is a dumb way to do business,” but as I have said in previous posts there is more than “freeconomics” when it comes to online publications.

Dave Price needs to stop being so narrow-minded and take the time to look around and see where technology is taking us.
